Rhinostat is a dosage titration system which allows for gradual & comfortable withdrawal from decongestants while maintaining nasal inspiratory airflow.

Rhinostat kits are individually formulated for each rhinitis medicamentosa patient, depending upon the active compound in the decongestant nasal spray the patient is currently addicted to.  Rhinostat provides the user with an apparatus that allows them to progressively reduce the concentration of the active compound in their decongestant.  Depending upon the particular brand or type of spray, this will either be:

Type Frequency
Oxymetazoline hcl Most Common (USA)
Phenylepherine hcl Second Most Common (USA)
Xylometazoline hcl Most Common (Europe, Canada, Australia)
Naphazoline hcl Rare (USA)  More Common in Asia

What does the Rhinostat apparatus consist of?

The Rhinostat apparatus is comprised of two bottles.  The first bottle (dispenser bottle) contains a decongestant nasal spray formulation identical to the user's current decongestant spray (based upon one of the compounds listed above).  The Rhinostat diluent solution (second bottle) is identical to the decongestant nasal spray formulation, without the active ingredient (vehicle placebo).  The Rhinostat apparatus allows these two solutions to be precisely combined, thereby giving the user control of the dosage strength.  The target rate of reduction (dosage titration) is 15% per day.

The Rhinostat method is most effective for those patients who have no other underlying medical or physiologic conditions contributing to their rebound congestion (such as allergies or a deviated septum.)  Patients who do have allergies concomitant to rhinitis medicamentosa should consider discussing  with their physicians the use of  intranasal steroids along with Rhinostat.

What is the benefit of gradual reduction vs. abrupt cessation of the decongestants?

Gradual and precise dosage titration preserves normal nasal inspiratory flow as decongestants are withdrawn. Patients not weaned gradually will experience a four to seven day period of discomfort and congestion.  An abrupt cessation of decongestants in patients with rhinitis medicamentosa induces marked nasal blockage because of rebound congestion. The pronounced nasal obstruction is hard to endure and therefore patients often start using the decongestants again after only a few days of withdrawal. This is why the treatment of rhinitis medicamentosa often fails:

1 Fluticasone propionate nasal spray is more effective and has a faster onset of action than placebo in treatment of rhinitis medicamentosa. H Hallen, J. Enerdal and P. Graf.

Mechanism Of Action:

The severity of the rebound congestion in the nasal mucosa is proportional to the strength of the dosage and the frequency of usage.  The progressively reduced strength doses that the Rhinostat System delivers, provokes a gradually diminished rebound reaction.  The patency of the nasal airway is maintained as the rebound congestion is effectively controlled .  Rhinomanometric measurement shows that nasal airflow remains near normal when the decongestant is withdrawn using Rhinostat's gradual method.

Eventually, the urgent need to use the decongestant completely subsides.

Rhinostat is not "Alternative Medicine."  It is not a homeopathic or herbal therapy.  It does not contain any drugs, compounds or other ingredients which are not already found in the nasal spray the user is currently addicted to.

What Rhinostat Users Experience:

Persons addicted to Afrin or other nasal spray who use the Rhinostat System substitute the Rhinostat dispenser bottle for their regular bottle of nasal spray.  The Rhinostat Dispenser bottle contains a formulation identical to the decongestant nasal spray the patient is currently addicted to.  Users experience the same decongestant effect when using Rhinostat as they would using their regular brand of decongestant.

Once each day, the Rhinostat dispenser bottle is "cycled" and the strength of the nasal spray is reduced by approximately 15%.  It generally takes between 17 and 42 days to withdraw using this method.

If the Rhinostat Kit fails to end the patient's addiction, it may be returned for a prompt refund of the purchase price.  Generally, this is an indication that there may be other contributing causes of the patient's congestion.  In such cases, we suggest that the patient return to their physician to consider other medical and/or surgical options for the treatment of rhinitis medicamentosa.  If a second kit is needed for another attempt, Rhinostat will provide the additional kit - free of charge.

Because Rhinostat maintains normal nasal inspiratory flow, we believe that Rhinostat represents the best first course of therapy and can spare many patients the cost, discomfort and side effects associated with other more invasive protocols.  This is particularly true in the vast majority of rhinitis medicamentosa patients who have no other underlying medical or physiologic problems and have simply become addicted to Afrin or other decongestant nasal sprays.

Can I Just "Water Down" My Own Nasal Spray?

Over-the-counter saline nasal sprays contain preservatives (typically benzylkonium chloride) which has been shown to worsen the congestion associated with Rhinitis Medicamentosa.  The Rhinostat diluent solution is free of these problematic preservatives, which makes the withdrawal process more comfortable for the patient.

In addition, the very precise titration the Rhinostat Apparatus allows for is extremely difficult to replicate.   Precise dosage titration will maximize airflow and reduce rebound swelling as the withdrawal process progresses.

17.  Is It Safe To Order From Rhinostat?

Rhinostat has been helping people overcome their addiction to decongestant nasal sprays since 1999.  Our method is safe, effective and guaranteed.  If we are unable to help you achieve your goal of withdrawing from the decongestant sprays, you may return your kit to Rhinostat for a cheerful refund.
